APLer seeking employment

Postby ArrayMac227 on Fri Jan 06, 2017 2:57 pm

(already posted to comp.lang.apl,currently with no replies.)
Gentlefolk,

I start this thread in the hope of bridging the gap between:

. employers, who say they cannot find APL talent
. APL talent, who say they cannot find employers

Mainstream job boards tend towards Applied Physics Laboratory, or Asia Pacific Lines, which is an unfortunate reality.

Richard Proctor`s APL Skills Database seems dormant, as does the page on the Vector website. (Please pipe up if this is _not_ true...)

I get the impression there are a lot of APL hobby projects. Problem is, one can get sucked into spending time on them, with no real return.

If anyone has comments/insights/suggestions on how to connect APL talent to worthwhile gigs, please reply to this.

To be continued...

I am an Employer and can provide "a" perspective, my own. Find "somebody" who is doing something worthwhile and write code for them, for free if necessary. There is nothing better to sell yourself than have your code be a running application serving a purpose and providing a value to society. If the application becomes successful, that "somebody" will have no option but to come to you. Contrary to what you have experienced, finding Talent is very difficult, so if you can prove you are good without costing the Employer, that works hugely in your favor.

Before implementing this idea, evaluate your opportunity cost. There is more than one way to think about employment.

Without knowing what they are doing, how is this possible?

You ask people and see where you can add value.

Posting on this forum doesn't seem to reach many people, given the single response. Any other ideas?
