News about Dyalog

Roger Hui

We are very sad to pass on the news that Roger Hui (Wikipedia, APL Wiki) passed away peacefully on Saturday October 16th, with his wife Stella and his children Nicholas and Rachel at his side. Roger has been an integral part of the APL and array language community since the 1970s, and Dyalog had the honour and pleasure to have him as a part of our team for 13 years, where he worked on language design and implementation.

Roger had been fighting cancer for a bit more than three years, continuing to work almost full time until this summer, while treatment remained effective. During this period, he also managed to co-author, and fortunately also present a paper on "APL Since 1978" at the History of Programming Languages IV conferences this summer (paper and presentation).

We'll be back with more memories of Roger and his time on the Dyalog team in the near future, but wanted to pass the sad news on to the community.

Tributes and photos can be sent to Roger's memorial page.

UPDATE: Roger's memorial service was on Saturday 30 October at 14:00 (UCT-7) in the sanctuary of Burnaby Alliance Church, British Columbia. A recording on the service can be viewed online – https://youtu.be/_8FG81Ze1aM. In lieu of flowers, the family intends to donate any loving gifts to BC Cancer Foundation and Burnaby Central Park for a memorial bench.

This news was also reported on the J programming forum and Hacker News (which is also displaying a black bar at the top of the web site in Roger's honour).
